5 Great South End Spots to Take your Weekend Coffee
Here are some of my favorite places to sit outside with a cup of coffee in the South End. And a few suggestions of places that brew the good stuff.
1. Blackstone Park on Washington Street – Blackstone Park takes up nearly 4 square city blocks, and as a result, there isn’t anything within those 4 blocks to cast a shadow other than trees. Lots of sunny benches and grass to plop yourself down on, as well as a big fountain centerpiece that trickles with cool water in the summer. You will no doubt see some interesting characters here though, as it’s distance from the street makes this a popular spot among some of the South End’s shadier residents – in short, it’s always Happy Hour for someone at Blackstone! But I’ve been going there for 2+ years now, in all seasons, and don’t have one incident to report. Totally safe in the daylight hours. Just make sure your dog doesn’t pick up any empty nip bottles or syringes. (Nearby Coffee: Flour Bakery, Code 10, Stella Cafe)
2. Outside a South End Church – As the weather gets warmer, windows get opened to circulate the air. That action also circulates sound & music better, and grabbing a spot of curb for your keister and coffee outside either the Union United Methodist Church (485 Columbus) or the Concord Baptist Church (190 Warren) will be a treat for your ears and soul alike. Weekend services for both regularly feature spirited gospel choirs and boisterous congregations (how I picture it anyway). Caffeine and absolution – not a bad start to the morning. (Nearby Coffee: Starbucks, Haley House, Amsterdam Cafe (especially is espresso is your drink))
